Jose Melendrez

Jose currently serves as the Executive Director for the Office of Community Partnerships in the UNLV School of Community Health Sciences. He is responsible for coordinating and building partnerships that support students and faculty initiatives including working with community-based organizations that provide internships and real world experience. Jose works with the Center for Health Disparities and the American Indian Research and Education Center supporting faculty directives, community engagement, student advocacy, research, programming and development. Jose supports the development new recruitment strategies to increase the diversity of students in the School of Community Health Sciences, facilitates and provides programmatic support for the Nevada Minority Health and Equity Coalition. Jose serves as the liaison on for the School of Community Health Sciences for Title III and Title V initiatives. This includes service with the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Hispanic Serving Institutional task force.

Jose received his Masters in Social Work from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor where his studied Community Organizing with a focus on Communities and Social Systems. Jose completed his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Previously Jose has provided leadership for new initiatives at UNLV that included development of the Title III and Title V Minority Serving Institution Leadership initiative, the Vice Presidential Diversity Commission, the Institute on Diversity and Social Justice, and director of the UNLV Multicultural Center. Jose has serves as a Field Instructor, Field Liaison and Instructor for the School of Social Work and School of Community Health Sciences. Jose has in-depth experience in diversity and multicultural training, community organizing, social justice education and advocacy as it pertains to diverse and equity initiatives and populations.

Volunteer activities includes service as the Assistant Cub Master for Pack 129 at St, Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Vice President for Minors division with the Summerlin North Little League, on the Board of Directors for the Latin Chamber of Commerce, serves as a Trustee for the Las Vegas Clark County Library District, and serves on the board of the Silver State Health Insurance Exchange appointed by Governor Brian Sandoval.
